How to use Fire Glass

How Much Fire Glass Do I Need?

We’ve put together a quick reference guide so you can easily calculate how much fire glass you will need. If you require a different depth of fire glass, for example 2 1/2”, just add the 1" and the 1 1/2” weights together.

How To Save On the Cost Of Your Fire Glass

As you will see, the amounts required can be quite large, particularly if you have a bigger fire pit.

Fire Glass works perfectly well with a depth of 1 1/2” above the level of the burner, but depending fillfinal.pngon the design of your fire pit, you may have 2 or more inches below the burner. However, you do not need to use fire glass in this part of your fire pit. It is perfectly acceptable to use pea gravel up to burner level, or you could use lava rock, which is much cheaper than fire glass.

If you have a deep area to fill, start with a layer of our 1” lava rock, to bing it close to the level of the burner. Then top that, with a layer of 1/4 lava rock to come up to burner level or just above. The reason for the layer of smaller lava rock, is to fill the holes between the larger rocks below, and stop the fire glass slipping through.

This can be applied to any fire pit or fireplace, no matter what size and can make a considerable saving over the cost of using fire glass throughout.

If you fire glass top layer is a strong dark colour, for example Black, Reds or Dark Blues you could use only a 1” deep layer.
If you final layer is a lighter colour, because the lava rock below is dark, you might consider a thicker layer of fire glass, maybe 1 1/2 or 2”.

Also it is worth bearing in mind, that the thinner the final layer of fire glass, the more likely the lava rock layer below might get exposed, which doesn’t look so good. Maybe kids running their hands through the glass or pets walking over it. Generally speaking, 1 1/2" layer should suffice in most circumstances.
