FIRE PIT MATCH-LIT IGNITION SYSTEM

THIS IS THE MOST BASIC OF THE IGNITION SYSTEMS. THE USER OPENS THE GAS VALVE MANUALLY USING THE GAS VALVE KEY AND LIGHTS THE BURNER WITH A LONG MATCH. TO TURN OFF, YOU SIMPLY CLOSE THE GAS VALVE.


SPARK IGNITION

FIRE PIT SPARK IGNITION SYSTEM

THIS IS THE NEXT STEP UP FROM THE MATCH-LIT SYSTEM. AN IGNITOR PROBE IS INSTALLED NEXT TO A GAS OUTLET ON THE BURNER. IT IS CONNECTED BY WIRE TO A PUSH BUTTON PLACED ON THE OUTER WALL OF THE STRUCTURE. THE USER OPENS THE GAS VALVE USING THE GAS KEY AND PUSHES THE BUTTON CAUSING THE PROBE TO SPARK, IGNITING THE BURNER. NO ELECTRICITY SUPPLY IS NECESSARY. THE SPARK IS EITHER GENERATED BY A PIEZO IGNITOR OR A BATTERY POWERED SPARK IGNITOR. THE BATTERY IS LOCATED WITHIN THE BUTTON ITSELF FOR EASY REPLACEMENT.

THESE SAFETY SYSTEMS HAVE VARIOUS NAMES DEPENDING ON THE MANUFACTURER. IN ESSENCE, IT IS A FAILSAFE SYSTEM WHICH CUTS OFF THE GAS SUPPLY IN THE EVENT OF A FAILURE WITH THE PILOT FLAME. IT CAN BE EITHER MATCH-LIT OR USE SPARK IGNITION. THE PILOT AND THERMOCOUPLE ARE INSTALLED NEXT TO A GAS OUTLET ON THE BURNER AND CONNECTED UP TO AN APPROPRIATE GAS VALVE. THE USER DEPRESSES AND TURNS A KNOB TO THE PILOT POSITION. THIS OPENS THE PILOT VALVE ALLOWING GAS TO FLOW. THE PILOT IS THEN LIT EITHER BY MATCH OR SPARK IGNITOR. THE FLAME ENGULFS THE THERMOCOUPLE. ELECTRICITY GENERATED FROM THE HEAT, FLOWS TO AN ELECTROMAGNET WHICH HOLDS OPEN THE PILOT VALVE. THE KNOB IS KEPT DEPRESSED UNTIL THE PILOT LIGHT REMAINS ALIGHT BY ITSELF AND THEN TURNED TO THE ON POSITION. GAS FLOWS TO THE BURNER AND IS LIT BY THE PILOT FLAME. IF THE PILOT FLAME BLOWS OUT OR IS EXTINGUISHED FOR WHATEVER REASON, THE THERMOCOUPLE COOLS, ELECTRICITY IS NO LONGER GENERATED AND THE PILOT VALVE SNAPS SHUT, EFFECTIVELY SHUTTING OFF THE GAS SUPPLY TO THE SYSTEM. SOME MANUFACTURERS USE THE THERMOCOUPLE DIRECTLY WITH THE MAIN BURNER FLAME, FOREGOING THE PILOT ALTOGETHER. 


ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEMS

THIS IS THE TOP OF THE RANGE OF IGNITION SYSTEMS. A FLICK OF A SWITCH IS ALL THAT IS REQUIRED FROM THE USER, THE “BRAINS” OF THE SYSTEM DOES THE REST. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS, THE SYSTEM NEEDS AN EXTERNAL POWER SOURCE, EITHER FROM MAINS SUPPLY OR BATTERY.

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS OF THESE SYSTEMS ON THE MARKET. SOME HAVE A PILOT, SOME DO NOT, SOME USE A THERMOCOUPLE OR THERMOPILE, OTHERS USE ANOTHER TYPE OF FLAME SENSING INSTRUMENT. THERE ARE ALSO A VARIETY OF WAYS THE BURNER IS LIT, FOR EXAMPLE, HOT SURFACE AND HOT WIRE IGNITION USE AN ELEMENT/WIRE THAT HEATS UP TO A TEMPERATURE SUFFICIENT TO IGNITE THE GAS. SPARK IGNITION USES AN ELECTRODE TO PRODUCE A SPARK TO DO THE SAME.

DESPITE THE VARIETY, ALL THESE SYSTEMS BASICALLY WORK IN THE SAME WAY. THE USER OPERATES THE SYSTEM USING A HANDHELD REMOTE CONTROL, TIMER OR WALL SWITCH. ONCE SWITCHED ON THE BURNER WILL LIGHT AND AS LONG AS A FLAME IS PRESENT, WILL OPERATE UNTIL IT IS SWITCHED OFF BY THE USER. IF THE FLAME IS EXTINGUISHED IN THE MEANTIME, THE SYSTEM WILL CLOSE OFF THE GAS AND AFTER A SHORT PERIOD WILL RESTART THE IGNITION SEQUENCE TO RELIGHT THE BURNER. IF THE BURNER DOES NOT LIGHT WITHIN A SPECIFIC NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS, THEN THE SYSTEM WILL SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY.
